I learned how to quench a fire
But they never taught me the skills to ignite
So whenever I am out there, my meal is raw
The night is dark and my bones stay cold

Some say: “be safe, it’s all you’re needing”
But is ‘be safe’ always worth the fight?
You may be winning but there’s no win
Without a loss on the other side

I can hear the bear’s bellow
As he starts fishing the shallow
I am captured in the dirt and mumble:
“Will I survive when the bear is hungry?”
But someday I’ll rewrite this story
About some place filled with glory
It shines in the sun
‘Cause someday I’ll recall this day
The boy that used to say: “hold on”

Being alone seemed worth all pennies
But I’ve grown up with folks around
The years taught me that you can’t be both
Distraction and surprise in a fight

I can hear the bear’s bellow
As he starts fishing the shallow
I am captured in the dirt and mumble:
“Will I survive when the bear is hungry?”
But someday I’ll rewrite this story
About some place filled with glory
It shines in the sun

So, I take a breath and I dive under,
I swim ashore and believe in wonders
I start a fight on the edge
I take a breath, he pushes me under
As I fight back I start to wonder:
“Can I ever win this clash?”

Will I some way recall this day
The boy that used to say: “hold on”?

There’s a big old train heading north on the rail
With a bunch of people paying heavy bills
For the same road to a different home

I see a young kid, it could be me
With too much candy, that’s all he need
He can’t see the worries on mom’s face

And we’re all on a train back home
And we all have stories, that’ve never been told
And we’re all sitting next to each other
Haven’t spoken a word for at least an hour
We’re on a train back home

All kinds of people are running by
Who knows the reason for their try to escape and just fly?

I see a young couple, maybe married soon
They have no eyes for the world outside their cocoon
Can’t see the old man’s lonely eyes

And we’re all on a train back home
And we all have stories, that’ve never been told
And we’re all sitting next to each other
Haven’t spoken a word for at least an hour
We’re on a train back home

Five strings left to play
Like I found a soulmate today
Eager to play, too weak to say

Man, I’m caught up in my mind
I have tried but lost sight
Of the guy I wanna be
The guy I just can’t be

I wanna hop on some train
Drive the road the wrong way
I wanna run in vain
I just want shivers in the rain

Five stories on my mind
Reasons to cancel the night
With some folks I should know
Some folks I don’t know

I wanna hop on some train
Drive the road the wrong way
I wanna run in vain
I just want shivers in the rain

With my head high in the clouds
I can barely see the human crowd
Down at my feet
Running around in every street

While I’m high up there,
I can finally take some air
‘Cause down
I see cons under the sheets

And I wonder, where is the line
That separates wrong from right
‘Cause my feet are steady on the ground
but my head high in the clouds

Even here, I can feel their fight
Searching for grace and a place to hide
from more command
‘Cause another will make them bend

From this height, I can take a step down,
And I see we’ve built this crazy town
Goals rising high
Like towers in the sky

And I wonder, where is the line
That separates wrong from right
‘Cause my feet are steady on the ground
But I’m scared that they get drowned
by the world tearing me apart

I’ve stared many times high at the sky
Longing for an answer or a clue flying by
‘Cause I’m stuck here on the ground

I’m heading north, man
I’m doing fine
Been on this road since
I tossed ‘em a dime
In the fountain of life

I’m allergic to losing
I’m insured like hell
I keep looking for mirrors
reflecting my flair

But the longer I stare
It’s just an empty shell

The days I’ve roamed, I’ve grown in gloating pride
The days of floating hope inside

I found my treasure
With open eyes in the dark
I buried it close by
Alongside my heart

But in full light, I see
The devil’s graveyard

The days I’ve roamed, I’ve grown in gloating pride
The days of floating hope are left behind

The days I’ve roamed, I’ve grown in gloating pride
The days of floating hope are left behind
Today I decide, to drop this dime
I’ll try to fight this life’s lie
To find one of a kind
So I’ll make up my mind

The record whispers an old song
That seems written for me alone
The room is baptized in familiar sounds
Gives me things to think about

I’m lost in a book of stories
Told by men full of dreams
They share their prayers and sin
Told by men full of fears

The book gives me wings
Gives me things to hold on to
Oh, now I can look ahead
I won’t forget that I’m not alone

The pages whisper some old words
Golden grasps fulfill my search
Wise sermons for you and me
Life lessons from history

I’m lost in a book of stories
Told by men full of dreams
They share their prayers and sin
Told by men full of fears

Wise minds who knew
The harsh side of truth
Hidden poems from above
Written letters of love
I stand on shoulders of giants
Share their stories like they’re mine

I stand on shoulders of giants
Share their stories like they’re mine
